And The Mountains Echoed

‘And the mountains echoed’ is a deeply moving epic of heartache, hope and above all the unbreakable bonds of love. It's the tale of separation where the 10 year old Abdullah is compelled by his father to hand over his baby sister ‘Pari’ into a wealthy family. We can say that, most writings of Khaled Hosseini are impressive and heart-touching. This book “And the mountains echoed” is his third book published in 2013 which is very different from previous ones. It portrays the fondness between two siblings Abdullah and Pari. Their Mother had bitten the dust by giving birth to Pari. Therefore , since childhood, both were destined to live under the protection of a step-mother. Albeit, Abdullah is compelled by his father to hand over his sister.

Obviously , due to the persisting riots and rebellions in Kabul (Afghanistan), Abdullah and Pari were forced to immigrate to America and France respectively at a younger age. After a long time, Abdullah was married and owned a restaurant in America. Amidst his life at America, he has also given birth to a daughter and named her his sister's name “Pari “. Meanwhile, Pari had also settled in France and have children too.

Days rolled on, now both Abdullah and Pari have grown old. Once, after a long period of seperation, they met accidentally and expressed their utmost feelings of love and affection. Both hugged and shared their lingering memories each other. The main reason behind this meeting was his daughter Pari; her ingenuity and profound love led to this eventful moment.
According to Pari, she was unaware of her own biography herself and would have probably died without knowing her history and Abdullah. Luckily, A Letter left behind by her step-uncle “Nabi", before his own death in Kabul led to this contentedly moment. He had detailed the events of her childhood among other things. The letter was in the care of Markos Varvaris, a surgeon working in Kabul, who had then searched for and found Pari in France. Thus, this marvelous book narrates a lot of short stories intertwined with each other and depicts exactly what life is all about; That it always turns out to be entirely different from what we expected it to be; May be driven by the so called "fate".
At the end of the book, the author indicates that, the title of this book was inspired in part by William Blake's lovely poem, “Nurse’s Song”. For all the bookworms, I recommend this one to read to developed your imagination power in order to understand the history of Kabul with a taste of a fictional motive.
