A Timeless Love Letter: A Review of PremaLekhanam

PremaLekhanam is a humorous and insightful exploration of love and society through the epistolary romance of Saramma and Kesavan Nair. Set in rural Kerala, the novel offers a poignant commentary on gender roles, societal expectations, and the human condition, while captivating readers with its witty dialogue and endearing characters.

PremaLekhanam, also known as The Love Letter, is a well-known novel in Malayalam literature written by Vaikom Muhammad Basheer. That book is recognized for its curiosity, comedy, and perceptions of interpersonal relationships and social interactions. This book, which was published in the middle of the 20th century, shows Basheer's skillful storytelling and his capacity to combine enthralling lines with social evaluations.

Saramma, a self-reliant woman, and Kesavan Nair, an educated but he was jobless, are the main characters of Prema Lekhanam. The story begins with Kesavan writing a love letter to Saramma, which initiates a series of conversations that become the novel’s significant plot points. Their friendship is gradually gained by the course of their letters, which are characterized by amusement, kindness, and honesty about their lives and surroundings. The story, which is set in a small village in Kerala, portrays the beauty of rural life while engaging with love and kindness. Kesavan diverged context with honesty and poetic style in letters that contrast with Saramma’s sensible observations and mindset. That part shows distinctive world views of love affairs.

Due to Basheer's simple narrative style and method, they differ. The writing format provokes readers to have a detailed and close look inside the characters, which helps verify sincerity in their conversations. Basheer’s use of native and colloquial language urges people to travel to Kerala and it enhances the novel's realism. One remarkable aspect of this story is comedy which hooks the minds of readers. by highlighting meaningless conversations it conveys their societal standard by delving into the depth of their significant conversations of affection.

I had a very pleasant and enlightening experience reading PremaLekhanam. I was deeply affected by Basheer's ability to combine humor and insightful social commentary. And The characters were real and well-drawn. Saramma's challenges advise the challenges of gender norms which were common in that era. but she is shown as an equal player for romance in the story. The challenges and obstacles of joblessness due to less education and facilities personified Kesavan's character. Both characters were highly influenced by my thoughts and ideas.

Overall, it is a timeless masterpiece, Prema Lekhanam has been praised for its social insight and comical aspects. Because of Basheer's fascinating storytelling, it is a timeless work of Malayalam literature that should not be missed. Strongly advised.
